Attorney: Fort Wayne clerk to resign weeks before election

An attorney for Fort Wayne's longtime city clerk says she will resign weeks before the general election because of health reasons.

Attorney Mark GiaQuinta said Monday that Democratic City Clerk Sandy Kennedy will resign within days because of "the stress of the job." The 76-year-old Kennedy has held the post since 1983 and was not seeking re-election Nov. 3.

GiaQuinta said Kennedy's pending resignation was unrelated to a call by the Allen County Republican Party that she resign amid allegations that she threatened city employees' jobs if they didn't contribute to or participate in the campaign of Deputy City Clerk Angie Davis, who's seeking to succeed Kennedy.

If Kennedy resigns, the Allen County Democratic Party would select a new city clerk until the newly elected clerk takes office.
