More than 1.3 million new cases were filed in Indiana trial courts last year, according to the Indiana Judicial Service report released Wednesday. The report details court operations at the county and appellate level for calendar year 2014.

Highlights from the report include:

•    Last year, 228,570 filed cases included an individual who went to court without a lawyer. That is nearly a 14 percent decrease as compared to 2013.

•    Courts used an interpreter in 11,374 trial court cases in 2014 for a total cost of $462,011 in interpreter fees; courts spent $470,686 in fees two years ago on 7,955 cases.

•    The number of criminal and civil jury trials continues to drop in Indiana. There were 1,169 civil and criminal jury trials held statewide in 2014 as compared to 1,399 to 2013. In 2009, there were 1,590 jury trials.
