U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt also sentenced 56-year-old Arlan Johnson of Muncie to three years of probation Thursday and ordered him make restitution of $8,500.
Johnson, who was a lieutenant and a firearms instructor, said in court that he wanted "to apologize to everybody" for letting them down.
Johnson was accused of stealing the ammunition between January 2012 and Aug. 5, 2015, a month before he retired, and selling it online and in person. Authorities say he accumulated more than $100,000 in gambling losses.
