Former Monroe County auditor faces fraud charges

A former Monroe County auditor faces fraud and official misconduct charges for allegedly using his county-issued credit card for personal expenses.

Online court records show three fraud counts and the misconduct charge were filed this week against 64-year-old Steve Saulter of Bloomington for using his county-issued credit card 15 times in the fall of 2015 to purchase food and medicine.

The Herald-Times reports Saulter admitted making the $620 in purchases, but told a police detective he unintentionally used the office credit card instead of his personal debit card because he was under a lot of personal stress at the time and the cards were similar in appearance.

Saulter's wife had been ill, and she died on Feb. 14.

Saulter was county auditor for 7½ years before resigning in July.
