March Madness: Live Well, Be Well

It’s that crazy time of year when many folks mysteriously disappear for long “meetings” in the middle of the workday. I know that I have a few meetings scheduled that involve a hard court and some yelling at the TV! In all seriousness, I am looking forward to spending time with some colleagues and taking a much-needed break from the daily grind of the practice of law. Hopefully you also will be able to take some time out of your busy calendar to sneak in a basketball game or two during March Madness. I think these social breaks are the things we all need to do more often so that we can be our best when working with our clients.

One of the goals of the IndyBar’s three-year strategic plan is an increased focus on wellness, both for our individual attorney members and for our community as whole. This goal came from our strategic planning retreat, where many of our members expressed concern about the increasing demands on attorneys and the growing number of attorneys who are struggling to deal with the stress of their jobs. IndyBar staff and leadership heard these concerns, and we are working to provide increased programming and support to our members to help them when life gets tough.

Unfortunately, many of us seem to have someone close to us who recently has struggled with an illness, grief or a work crisis. It can be difficult to know how to support a friend who is experiencing such issues. The IndyBar currently has a program designed to provide support to our members, colleagues and families going through these challenges. Our Helping Enrich Attorney Lives (HEAL) program was created to assist lawyers, judges and paralegals in the Indianapolis community who are personally experiencing a crisis or are affected by the crisis of someone close to that person, such as a spouse or professional colleague. Requests for assistance can be made by a concerned friend or colleague on behalf of another individual or by the individuals in crisis themselves.

Requests should be made to [email protected] or to Julie Armstrong at [email protected]. All requests for assistance will be met with a meaningful, compassionate and appropriate response under the circumstances. All requests are confidential and are not shared outside of the HEAL program. Please reach out if you know someone who needs some support during a difficult time. We all have an obligation to help those around us be well and the IndyBar is here provide support. Additional information about HEAL is available online at indybar.org/heal.

Live it up in Louisville!

And speaking of taking a break from the grind and enjoying some time away from the office, don’t miss the opportunity to join 300 or so attorneys and judges at the IndyBar Bench Bar Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, June 15-17, 2017!

We will kick off the conference with a golf outing on Thursday afternoon and then will head to Churchill Downs for dinner, cocktails and live racing! The conference agenda is packed full of opportunities to gain CLE credit while also focusing on the need to be well and take care of ourselves and our community. Our Bench Bar Committee has worked hard to think “outside of the box” and to provide conference attendees with some unique experiences.

Conference registration is now open at indybenchbar.org. Make sure you register early and reserve your hotel room, as U2 has announced a concert in Louisville on Friday night, June 16th. Hotel rooms will sell out quickly, and we likely will not be able to obtain additional rooms.

Go Outside your Comfort Zone!

If you are looking for opportunities to step outside of your comfort zone and to network with others outside the legal community, join the IndyBar at one of these upcoming events: The Racing Attorneys Conference (TRAC), April 18-19, or the Medical-Legal Dinner, April 19.

TRAC is an annual event attended by motorsports professionals from across the country that combines education, development and networking with leaders in the motorsports industry. The Medical-Legal Dinner brings doctors and lawyers together for a night of camaraderie and good conversation and will feature keynote speaker Dr. Ora H. Pescovitz, a renowed medical professional who will speak about how to lead with purpose. Additional information and registration for both events can be found at indybar.org/events. We hope you expand your horizons by joining us at one of these programs.•
