After more than 25 years leading the Indiana State Bar Association, Tom Pyrz left the office for the last time Jan. 5.

Pyrz led the state-wide organization since November 1992, always emphasizing the attorney volunteers ran the ISBA and he just administered the programs and projects they wanted.

“I have the best job in the world,” Pyrz told the Indiana Lawyer when he announced his retirement in 2016. “I deal with nothing but the best people.”

In recognition of his service, Pyrz was made an honorary Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives for Jan. 5. ISBA president Andi Metzel presented the citation on behalf of Indiana Speaker Brian Bosma.

The honor from the legislative branch completed a triple play of commendations from all three branches of state government. At the ISBA annual meeting in September, the governor’s office presented Pyrz with a Sagamore of the Wabash and the judiciary presented him with a citation and challenge coin.

The ISBA is now under the leadership of Joe Skeel, former executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists.
