An inmate who walked away from a southern Indiana prison more than 30 years ago is back in custody after being injured in a central Indiana car crash.

Shelby County sheriff’s deputies responding to the crash late Tuesday say the man told them his name was Terry Burton. However, while he was being treated at a hospital, they learned Terry Burton was dead. WISH-TV reports the man then told them his real name was Gary Lee Burton, that he escaped the Henryville Correctional Facility in the early 1980s and that he was tired of lying.

The 60-year-old Burton was jailed on preliminary charges of escape, operating while intoxicated and false informing as well as warrants from another county. He had been convicted of burglary in adjacent Johnson County in 1981.
