A Gary woman will spend up to 30 years in prison for killing a mother and trying to pass off the woman’s 3-month-old baby as her own.

The Herald Bulletin reports 39-year-old Geraldine R. Jones was sentenced Friday in Anderson. Jones was also ordered to serve 10 years’ probation. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and criminal confinement.

Prosecutors have said that Jones drove to Samantha J. Fleming’s home in Anderson in 2015 and posed as a state child services worker. Jones allegedly told the 23-year-old Fleming she was there to drive her and the baby to a court hearing.

Fleming’s body later was found in Jones’ Gary home. Fleming had been stabbed; her body doused in bleach.

Jones told family and neighbors she was pregnant with twins.
