A northwestern Indiana man who pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of a 5-year-old girl could avoid prison.

The News-Dispatch of Michigan City reported Marcus Scully of Trail Creek was sentenced Wednesday to a year each of prison, electronic monitoring and probation. The judge, however, is allowing him to be on electronic monitoring and probation first.

If Scully pays nearly $15,000 in restitution and completes community service, the court could change the prison term to another year of probation.

Scully pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He’s said he panicked and fled.

Relatives say Delaney Klewer and her 8-year-old sister were returning home from a park two blocks from their home in July 2017 when the collision occurred. Scully turned himself in two days afterward.
