Two magistrate judges and a practicing attorney have been named as finalists to fill an upcoming vacancy in the Allen Superior Court Criminal Division.

The Allen Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission announced Tuesday its selection of Anthony Churchward and magistrate judges Steven Godfrey and David Zent as its recommended candidates to succeed Judge John F. Surbeck, Jr.  The JNC, led by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, publicly interviewed six candidates at the Allen County Courthouse on Tuesday before announcing the three finalists. A seventh candidate, Huntington Circuit Judge Jamie Groves, withdrew his name from the interview process.

The commission will now submit the names of the finalists to Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb, who will make the final appointment to Surbeck’s seat. The sitting judge will retire in December, as will Civil Division Judge Stanley A. Levine.

The seven-member JNC is currently accepting applications to fill the vacancy left by Levine’s retirement. Applications are due Sept. 14, and interviews will be held at the Allen County Courthouse on Oct. 1 and, if necessary, Oct. 2.
