In celebration of National Adoption Day, Hoosier families will once again have an opportunity to smile for the camera in the courtroom. The Indiana Supreme Court has announced its authorization of cameras in court for uncontested adoptions during the month of November, allowing photography and video of the adoption proceedings.

The Supreme Court first opened the courts to audio and video coverage of National Adoption Day in 2012, when courts in Allen, Henry and Starke counties allowed media coverage of special adoption ceremonies. This year, trial courts in the following counties will allow cameras to document the process of joining 270 Hoosier children with their forever families:

  • Adams County
  • Bartholomew County
  • Clark County
  • Decatur County
  • Delaware County
  • Elkhart County
  • Fountain County
  • Grant County
  • Hamilton County
  • Howard County
  • Jennings County
  • Johnson County
  • Lake County
  • LaPorte County
  • Marion County
  • Monroe County
  • Montgomery County
  • Porter County
  • St. Joseph County
  • Shelby County
  • Spencer County
  • Tippecanoe County
  • Vanderburgh County

The Department of Child Services, Court Appointed Special Advocates, the Children’s Bureau and local adoption agencies will be involved in adoption events across the state. Each year there are about 3,600 adoptions in the Hoosier state.

More information about specific National Adoption Day events, dates and camera protocol can be found on the Supreme Court’s website.
