Officials northwestern Indiana’s Porter County, which hasn’t reported any general election votes, are sorting through a mix of problems to get ballots counted a day after the election.

A judge ordered 12 Porter County polling places to stay open late Tuesday after voting didn’t start on time at those locations.

County Commissioner Laura Blaney said Wednesday the delay was caused by several problems, including the late voting and absentee and early ballots not being sorted in a timely fashion.

She said the county commissioners are urging residents “to keep cool heads” as officials work on counting votes.

Blaney said County Clerk Karen Martin’s office and other officials were expected to begin counting about 18,000 early ballots Wednesday.

Calls to Martin’s office in Valparaiso were met Wednesday with busy signals.
