A central Indiana woman who pleaded guilty to neglect in connection with the death of her 23-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Kayla Hudson of Chesterfield was given her punishment Tuesday in a Madison County court. Hudson earlier pleaded guilty to charges of neglect of a dependent causing death and neglect causing serious injury to her 3-year-old son. Hudson cried in court before the sentence was handed down.

Paisley Hudson died last July in a hospital after being brought there by her mother. The coroner said she died from a blow to the head and two lacerations to her liver.

Hudson’s boyfriend, 29-year-old Ryan Ramirez, has been charged with murder in the girl’s death and neglect causing injury to the boy. He’s awaiting trial later this year.
