Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has announced the appointment of a magistrate judge to fill a trial court vacancy in Lake County.

Lake Circuit Court magistrate judge Stephen E. Scheele has been appointed to succeed Lake Superior Judge William E. Davis, who retired in April.

Scheele, who has held his magistrate position since Dec. 2016, formerly worked in private practice. He also has represented criminal defense cases in federal and Lake Superior courts. Scheele earned his law degree from Indiana University Mauer School of Law.

A date has yet to be determined for Scheele to be sworn in as a judge for Lake County Superior Court, according to Holcomb’s office. Scheele was one of three magistrate judges selected last month as finalists by the Lake County Judicial Nomination Commission, which interviewed 11 applicants for the position.
