Donavan Harris, 20, of Anderson was sentenced Tuesday after being found guilty last month of murder, attempted armed robbery and criminal confinement. He was sentenced to serve 50 at the Indiana Department of Correction followed by five years in formal probation and another five years in informal probation.
Harris’s sentence is tied to the death of 15-year-old Julian Craig, who was shot and killed during an attempted robbery on Nov. 24, 2023.
According to court documents, Harris did not pull the trigger on the gun that killed Craig, but he was involved in luring the intended robbery victim into a car that he was driving and where the shooting took place.
While Craig was lying in the backseat of the vehicle, unable to be seen by the victim, Harris allegedly lured the victim into the vehicle with the promise of paying a $3,000 debt he owed.
An altercation broke out in the vehicle, and the intended target shot and killed Craig in self-defense, according to court documents.
Under the felony murder doctrine, when someone commits or attempts to commit certain serious crimes and someone is killed during it, participants in the crime can be held responsible for that death.
