Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Patricia Riley

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission certified Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Patricia Riley for senior status Wednesday.

Riley will be retiring at the end of August and will assume her new role as a senior judge on Sept. 1.

She has been serving on the appellate bench since 1994 when she was appointed by then-Gov. Evan Bayh.

The Judicial Nominating Commission is currently accepting applications for Riley’s vacancy until June 7.

Candidates to succeed her must be an Indiana resident living in the third appellate district, which covers northern Indiana.

Candidates must also be a member of the Indiana Bar for at least 10 years or have served as an Indiana judge for five years. Candidates must provide pertinent background information, writing samples, references, and educational transcripts.

The commission will consider the applications and letters of recommendation and then conduct public interviews of qualified candidates.

Interviews are expected to be conducted June 24-25 and July 22-23.

After deliberating in executive session, the commission will publicly vote to send the three most qualified names to Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Holcomb will have 60 days to select Indiana’s next Court of Appeals judge from the three names submitted by the commission.
