The Marion County Judicial Selection Committee is accepting applications for a new superior court judge.

Judge Cynthia J. Ayers of the civil division will retire on March 15, creating a vacancy on the Marion Superior Court bench.

Chief Justice Loretta Rush, Committee Chairperson, and Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert Altice, Jr., Vice Chairperson, announced that applications opened Friday.

Applications are available online and must be submitted through the Indiana Courts Portal by 12 p.m. on April 12.

Candidates must be residents of Marion County and an attorney admitted to the Indiana bar for at least five years.

State law prohibits more than 52% of judges in Marion Superior Court from being members of the same political party. Ayers is a Republican.

Following local court rules, the Marion Superior Court Executive Committee offered any sitting judge the opportunity to transfer courts.

The transfer period has closed and a judge transferred to Court 4 which is where Ayers serves. The vacancy is in Level 6/Misdemeanor, Criminal Division.

The Marion County Judicial Selection Committee will meet on April 26 to interview applicants for the vacancy.

Details on the public interviews will be posted online.

After the interviews are conducted the committee will go into an executive session to consider applicants.

Afterwards, the committee will publicly vote to select a panel of three nominees to send to Gov. Eric Holcomb for appointment.
