The lawsuit was filed on June 23 in Monroe County Superior Court by plaintiff Steve Patterson. Duke Energy is the only defendant named in the lawsuit.
Patterson’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Representatives for Duke Energy said they’re reviewing the filing but could not provide further comment.
According to court documents, Duke Energy provided electrical services to Patterson’s home prior to the house fire on June 23, 2024. Patterson’s home had been without power for about four days before the fire started.
When the power was restarted, the three transformers on Patterson’s property exploded, starting the fire and destroying his home, court documents state.
Patterson is now suing the company for approximately $525,000 for negligence and breach of implied/express warranty.
The case is Steve Patterson v. Duke Energy, 53C01-2606-CT-001693.
