Subscribe NowIndiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush appointed three new members to the court’s Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys, which plays an important role in establishing the state’s public defense infrastructure.
The following members were appointed to the commission on Dec. 23:
- Hon. Karin McGrath, Kosciusko Superior Court 1
- Hon. Ryan Hatfield, Vanderburgh Circuit Court
- Mark Clark, Washington County Chief Public Defender (ret.)
Their appointments are effective Jan. 1, 2026.
Parameters for the Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys are laid out in Indiana Code section 33-40-5, which states in part that the chief justice can appoint three members to the commission, two of whom must be trial court judges.
According to Indiana Code, these members will serve an initial term that expires on June 30, 2029, and a four-year term that expires each fourth year thereafter.
New members will assist the commission in making recommendations to the state supreme court regarding standards for indigent defense services and adopt guidelines for indigent defense services, among other duties.
