Court hearings in Monroe County are expected to be delayed until at least Wednesday after the Justice Building closed due to a plumbing issue stemming from the county jail.
Officials in the Justice Building were alerted to the issue on Friday, according to Angie Purdie, commissioner administrator for the Monroe County Commissioners. Maintenance was informed that inmates at the Monroe County Jail allegedly flushed a commissary bag full of e-cigarettes and other items down a toilet.
The incident resulted in a sewer pipe blockage and subsequent flooding.
Water services were returned to the jail by Friday evening. The Justice Building and departments within the building, including the court, clerk’s office, prosecutor’s office and other connected offices, will remain closed through Wednesday.
All court hearings scheduled for early this week have been canceled and those scheduled for a hearing this week has been instructed to check to see if their court date has been moved..
The Monroe County Justice Building is located at 301 N. College Ave. near downtown Bloomington.
