A man convicted of domestic abuse who has been removed from the United States on four separate occasions was found guilty by a federal jury Sept. 10 of illegal reentry of a removed alien.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indiana’s Southern District announced the conviction.

According to court documents, Gilberto Hernandez-Sanchez, 29, of Mexico, was removed from the U.S. in 2021.

In 2024, he was arrested at the Plainfield Correctional Facility, where he was serving a sentence for domestic battery.

Hernandez-Sanchez has been removed from the U.S. four times, beginning in 2014, according to court documents. He has a criminal history of domestic battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and public intoxication endangering the life of another.

His initial entry occurred on Aug. 5, 2014, when he crossed the Mexican border into the United States without legal documentation or authorization to apply for admission and was promptly removed.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hernandez-Sanchez  unlawfully re-entered the country and was removed twice more that same month.

At an undetermined later date, Hernandez-Sanchez re-entered the United States and was again removed in November 2021. He re-entered in 2022 and was subsequently convicted on state charges.

A sentencing date has not yet been determined.
