A former officer with the Kokomo Police Department faces a possible life prison sentence after he was charged this week with allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and lying to investigators to try to cover it up.

A federal grand jury in Indianapolis returned a two-count indictment Thursday against Sinmi Asomuyide, 31., according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

His attorney did not immediately respond to The Indiana Lawyer’s request for comment.

The Kokomo Police Department also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, Interim Indiana Southern District U.S. Attorney Thomas Wheeler and Special Agent in Charge Timothy O’Malley of the FBI Indianapolis Field Office made the announcement of Asomuyide’s indictment.

On the indictment’s first count, Asomuyide is charged with sexually assaulting and kidnapping the minor in June 2024.

Asomuyide is also charged with lying to the Indiana State Police by denying sexual contact with the victim.

Asomuyide assaulted the victim in his squad car, according to the justice department.

The investigation into Asomuyide’s crimes is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The case is USA v. Sinmi Asomuyide, 1:25-cr-155.
