A Highland man caught stealing mail is facing more than two years in prison after being sentenced in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.

Nurldon Green III, 30, was sentenced by Senior Judge Jon DeGuilio after pleading guilty to theft of mail.

Green was sentenced to two years and three months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.

The United States Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Indiana announced Green’s sentence Thursday.

According to court records, from February 2022 through June 5, 2022, Green, while impersonating a United States Postal Service carrier, stole mail from various receptacles, which included checks made out to victims within the Northern District.

A probable cause affidavit stated that, at the time of his apprehension by the Demotte Police Department, Green was dressed as a USPS employee and was in possession of approximately 60 pieces of stolen mail in Demotte.

“Previous complaints to law enforcement in the area indicated a subject dressed as a U.S. Postal Service Letter Carrier was removing U.S. Mail from roadside mailboxes on Sundays, traditionally a day the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail to residences or businesses in the United States,” the affidavit stated.

When he was stopped, Green did not have a USPS authorized vehicle to deliver mail, and local law enforcement confirmed with representatives of the Postal Service that no employee should be out delivering mail in the area.

Additionally, when asked by officers, Green did not possess identification issued to USPS employees on his person, but stated it was in his vehicle.

Green had an official USPS satchel, which contained mail from various locations including Effingham, Illinois, Michigan City, Demotte, Valparaiso and Champaign, Illinois.

USPS inspectors spoke with Green, and he acknowledged he was not a USPS employee, but used the uniform to disguise himself while stealing mail from mailboxes.
