Russel Jerome Legreid II of Roanoke was sentenced Wednesday by a Wells County judge to a six-year term, three years of which he will serve in a state prison, followed by three years of probation. His driver’s license will also be suspended for two years.
Legreid, 63, pleaded guilty to causing death while operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more and causing catastrophic injury when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, The Journal Gazette reported.
In January 2020, Legreid was intoxicated when he crashed his vehicle into another vehicle in Bluffton. The crash killed 2-month-old Eliseo Martinez III and seriously injured his father, Eliseo Martinez, who nearly lost a leg in the crash’s aftermath and is still recovering from his injuries.
During Wednesday’s emotional sentencing hearing, Eliseo Martinez said he has forgiven Legreid but said he thinks he should receive the maximum sentences on both charges he pleaded guilty to.
Martinez told the court about his injuries, which included “destroyed” kneecaps, two broken femurs and breaks throughout his spine and shoulders. He said he now lives in daily pain through his legs, one of which almost could not be saved.
