Indiana law schools starting new year with strong incoming classes

Law schools in Indiana are welcoming students and preparing for a fall semester that will be as normal as masks and social distancing will allow.

At Notre Dame Law School, one-third of the new 1L students are persons of color, which makes the Class of 2024 the most diverse in the institution’s history. Also, the Fighting Irish are enrolling a bigger class, with 28 more students than started in the 2020 fall semester.

Indiana University Maurer School of Law also has more incoming students this semester and has increased the diversity composition to nearly one-fourth of the new class. Meanwhile, with this year’s 1L class pretty much the same size as last year’s, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law has again enrolled another class in which women are in the majority.

Academically, the just-arriving 1L classes in all the Hoosier law schools have median LSAT scores that are one point higher than the median score reported on the American Bar Association’s Standard 509 forms for the Class of 2023.

The preliminary profile of the new 1L classes at each of Indiana’s law schools is as follows:

IU Maurer
Number of 1L students: 192
Median LSAT: 164
Median GPA: 3.77
Percentage of women: 49%
Percentage of minorities: 24%

IU McKinney
Number of 1L students: 243
Median LSAT: 155
Median GPA: 3.56

Notre Dame Law School
Number of 1L students: 183

Classed started at IU McKinney and IU Maurer Aug 16 and Aug. 17, respectively. Law classes at Notre Dame will start Aug. 23. Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame are requiring students to be vaccinated, with exemptions granted for those with medical conditions or religious objections.
