The Indiana State Police is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for their 26th “Prescription Drug Take Back” initiative on April 27.

Collection sites will be set up at most state police posts across Indiana for expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs to be disposed of without threat to the environment.

The only post not participating is at the Toll Road in northern Indiana. The state police post in Pendleton will host its collection site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The “Take Back” initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through proper disposal of unwanted prescription drugs.

The program is for pill and liquid medications. Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be accepted. Needles or sharp objects of any kind will not be accepted for disposal

The initiative’s goal is to address a vital public safety and public health issue, according to a press release from the state police. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

The ISP noted that the common methods for disposing of unused medicines, flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose both potential safety and health hazards.

Other police departments and locations in Indiana that are participating in the Drug Take Back initiative can be found here.
