An Indianapolis transportation attorney has been named chairman of the American College of Transportation Attorneys.

ACTA, a nonprofit association consisting of a select nationwide group of experienced transportation defense lawyers, announced its election of Scopelitis, Gavin, Light, Hanson & Feary partner Michael B. Langford as chairman, effective Aug. 16.

“A hallmark component of ACTA’s mission is the publication of white papers, aimed to assist the trucking industry in navigating the complex legal environment,” Langford said in a news release. “In the coming year, one of our white paper focuses will be providing model tort reform legislation, specific to motor carriers.”

Langford’s transportation law career began when he joined Scopelitis as an associate more than 25 years ago following his graduation Indiana University Mauer School of Law. In practice, Langford concentrates on trial court litigation of personal injury and wrongful death claims and insurance coverage disputes. His work, according to the firm, includes regularly trying jury trials, engaging in 24/7 rapid response to accidents, serving as national defense counsel for motor carriers and acting as monitoring counsel for clients at risk of claims in excess of policy limits.

“Mike has always shown incredible dedication to ensuring the best future for the transportation industry,” ACTA founder Charles Carr said in a statement. “The relationships he has built both within our organization and within the trucking industry will help ensure that we remain one of the industry’s most dynamic resources during this time of so much transition.”

ACTA aims to serve as a confidential, reliable and supplemental legal resource to the trucking industry. Its members maintain at least 20 years of trucking industry service.
