The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law has announced that a pair of Ruth Lilly Law Library staff members are the recipients of two of the school’s most prestigious scholarships.
Tamara Rogers, a research and instructional services librarian, is one of the recipients of the Wilma Gibbs Moore Scholarship.
Also, Jackie Cooper, a senior acquisitions assistant, was awarded the Carol D. Nathan Staff Council Scholarship at the Chancellor’s Staff Recognition Ceremony last month.
According to an IU McKinney news release, Rogers is earning a Master of Library Sciences degree through the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering in Indianapolis, on top of her J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law. She also holds a master’s in social work and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
Prior to joining the law library in October, Rogers was the managing partner at Rogers Law Firm in Indianapolis, practicing estate planning and elder law. She also served for five years as a juvenile magistrate judge in Marion Circuit Court.
Wilma Gibbs Moore, for whom Rogers’ scholarship was named, was a leader in preserving and promoting African American history and culture in Indianapolis. She worked at Indiana University Libraries, the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library and also as the senior archivist of African American History at the Indiana History Center.
Rogers has said she wants to utilize her degree to take on leadership roles in libraries and continue Moore’s legacy, according to the news release.
Before joining the IU McKinney law library, Cooper worked more than four years at the Carmel Clay Public Library.
In her current position, she is responsible for ordering, cataloging and processing library materials and monitoring the library budget.
She received a library technical assistant A.S. degree from Ivy Tech Community College.
Cooper intends to obtain her bachelor’s degree and then pursue her master’s degree in library science, according to the release, allowing her to become a cataloger and to continue to serve students on campus by making information resources they need discoverable and searchable in the library’s catalog system.
The scholarship Cooper received was established in honor of Carol D. Nathan, retired dean of the faculties, for her outstanding leadership at IUPUI and contributions to the IUPUI Staff Council.
