The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission/Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications has an opening for an attorney from northeast Indiana to serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

The nominating commission is responsible for evaluating judicial candidates and submitting a list of three nominees to the governor for each vacancy on the Indiana Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals of Indiana and the Indiana Tax Court. The qualifications commission investigates complaints about judicial ethical misconduct.

Attorneys interested in filling the position must be admitted to the practice of law in Indiana, registered with the clerk of the Supreme Court and a resident of the second geographic district. Also, the candidates must collect the signatures of 30 attorneys supporting their nomination who are admitted to practice in Indiana, reside in the second district and are registered with the clerk of the Supreme Court. Finally, the candidate must make written consent to the nomination.

The candidate elected to the commission must live in the second district during the three-year term and not hold any salaried public office or office in a political party or organization.

The nominating petition to collect the 30 signatures is available online. The original petition with the nominee’s written consent and biography are due no later than 4 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Petitions and written consent must be sent to Gregory R. Pachmayr, Clerk of the Indiana Supreme Court, State House Room 216, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, 46204. Emailed or faxed petitions will not be accepted.

Biographies of each candidate will be available online around Sept. 20, and all second district attorneys will be notified by mail that ballots are available. Attorneys will then be able to cast their ballots online until 4 p.m. on Nov. 1.

The second district encompasses the counties of Adams, Blackford, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Delaware, Grant, Hamilton, Howard, Huntington, Jay, Madison, Marion, Miami, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, Wells and White.
