Lake County is looking for two new Superior Court judges to fill vacancies that will be created by some pending retirements.

The county’s Judicial Nominating Commission will take applications up until noon on Oct. 8. To be eligible, candidates must live in Lake County, be a U.S. citizen and admitted to the practice of law in Indiana.

The current annual salary of a state-paid trial court judge is $183, 513, according to Adam Clay, staff attorney for the Indiana Supreme Court Office of Communication Education and Outreach.

The judicial commission will meet Oct. 23 to interview applicants and then nominate two sets of five candidates.  State law dictates that the list of nominees will be passed to Gov. Mike Braun. He will have 60 days to make a decision or pass the choice to state Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush.

Judges Natalie Bokota and Shelia Moss are retiring at the end of the year, leaving two of 15 seats open in the Lake County Superior Court. Bokota presides over Criminal Division 2 while Moss presides over County Division 1.

Having multiple vacancies is not unusual, according to Clay.
