A Howard County judge sentenced Kody Key on Monday to 60 days in the county jail but suspended all but 30 days, which Key must spend on in-home detention, according to court records.
Key must also serve 335 days on supervised probation and complete a drug and alcohol program. He pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle with a scheduled 1 or 2 controlled substance in a person’s body, the Kokomo Tribune reported.
Police said that in February 2019, Key struck and fatally injured Sharon K. Edwards of Peru with his Dodge Ram 1500 truck in the parking lot of a J.C. Penney at the Kokomo Town Center mall in the north-central Indiana city.
Test results on blood drawn from Key determined that he had drugs in his system at the time of the collision, although court records do not state what those drugs were or how much was in his bloodstream at that time.
Key was originally charged with a felony count of causing death when operating a motor vehicle with a schedule 1 or 2 controlled substance in the blood.
