Why did you decide to enter the legal profession?
There were no attorneys (or real estate professionals) in my family or extended family, but I knew I wanted to pursue an advanced degree. While working during the year after undergrad to save up for a JD or MBA, I decided to take the LSAT and see how it went. When my score was OK, I figured it was meant to be and applied to law school. My favorite law school class was in real estate transfer, finance and development. For some reason, it really clicked with me, and I am grateful to have found a practice area early on that I still enjoy so much.
If you hadn’t pursued a legal career, what would you be doing?
Starfleet Academy? Or possibly something in marketing/distribution, my undergrad major.
Who is someone who has inspired you in your career?
I have worked for and with a number of inspirational people along the way–but I had the very good luck during one semester of law school to intern for Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Betty Barteau. I really admired her approach and how she treated her staff and learned that she subsequently worked on the Russian American Judicial Partnership helping Russia improve its judiciary system. The idea of an accomplished legal mind (and woman) contributing her experience and wisdom in that way halfway around the globe is so inspirational.
What makes a good lawyer/judge?
The ability to listen to a client and determine whether you are the right person to assist and, if not, the ability to connect the client with someone who can. Everyone deserves competent representation.
What is something you wish people knew about lawyers?
For most of us, our daily work lives bear little resemblance to the TV portrayals. Thank goodness.

Work worries looping in your brain at 2 a.m. usually look better in the light of day.
Tell us something surprising about you.
I am learning to play the harp.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
We will all make mistakes; it’s how you react that matters.
