If you hadn’t pursued a legal career, what would you be doing?
If I hadn’t pursued a legal career, I would likely be a wealth management professional. I was in the banking industry prior to practicing law. I was presented with the opportunity to work in the wealth management department at the bank I was working at right after I passed the Indiana Bar exam. I decided to practice law instead.
Who is someone who has inspired you in your career?
Prior to practicing law, I was inspired by the career of Michelle Obama. Her work ethic and accomplishments despite where she is from resonated with me. Over the last eight years of my practice, I have been inspired by other African American women in the legal industry that have gone on to establish themselves as change agents in the community.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I received was that you must do what you have to do to do what you want to do.
What makes a good lawyer/judge?
A good lawyer is someone who can represent his or her client with the highest degree of skill and compassion while maintaining a great reputation in the legal profession.
What is something you wish people knew about lawyers?
I wish people knew that lawyers have lives outside of their careers.
Tell us about a “lesson learned” moment you’ve had in your career.
A lesson learned moment I’ve had in my career is when I realized how important it is to manage your time. Without good time management skills, you run the risk of not only negatively impacting your reputation as an attorney but also cause unnecessary stress in your personal life.
Tell us something surprising about you.
Something surprising about me is that I love to watch boxing.
Why did you decide to enter the legal profession?
I decided to enter the legal profession so that I could assist my community with understanding the law. Many of them do not have access to an attorney. I wanted to fill that gap for individuals who looked like me and were from my hometown.
