Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC
Offer Korin began his decades-long legal career by representing individuals in civil rights cases covering everything from police misconduct to constitutional violations. After five years of this, Korin joined a small estate-planning firm. Though the new assignment interested him, he missed trial work. He was able to scratch that itch about a year-and-a-half later, when he and attorney Ronnie Katz formed Katz & Korin (the first iteration of his current firm). “The transition felt natural,” he said. “My early civil rights work required unique approaches to disputes between parties with unequal resources and standing in the community. The skills I learned back then remain useful in approaching complex business litigation.” Today, Korin represents individuals, family-owned businesses, and large corporate clients in matters such as contracts, employment questions and shareholder issues. “I was drawn to law because it combines intellectual rigor with real-world consequences,” he said. “Being a lawyer allows me to engage deeply with ideas, while also helping people and organizations achieve their goals.”
Givebacks: member, executive board and investment committee, Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation; former board member, Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis and Congregation Shaarey Tefilah
First job: washing windows
Important traits: “A good lawyer listens first and resists the urge to reach quick conclusions. He does this by looking at an issue from all sides. Also, he understands that trust is earned over time but can be lost in an instant.”
Mentors: “I have benefited from many informal mentors throughout my career — partners, colleagues, opposing counsel and judges. Yet, I would not be the lawyer and person that I am without the mentorship and friendship given to me by Michael Sutherlin. He taught me to never give up in holding those responsible accountable.”
Advice: “Be sure that you are passionate about being a lawyer. The practice of law can be professionally and financially rewarding, but it is also extremely stressful and demanding. Remember to take the time necessary to be present for yourself and your loved ones. That is easy to say but hard to do.”
