A Muncie man faces more than a decade in prison after he was found guilty of multiple firearm possession-related crimes stemming from a January 2023 incident.

On Friday, Delaware Circuit Court Judge Judi Calhoun sentenced De’Merio Strong, 28, to 13 years in prison after his conviction by jury of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and intimidation with a deadly weapon.

Strong had previously been convicted of armed robbery and battery by means of a deadly weapon, according to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to court documents, on Jan. 6, 2023, a Muncie Police Department officer responded to a report of shots fired in the area of W. 13th Street and S. Acorn Street in the city.

Strong allegedly ran from the area and was taken into custody by another Muncie police officer.

The officer found a silver and black handgun allegedly belonging to Strong in the backyard of a nearby residence.

Strong told police that he ran because he knew he knew there was a warrant for his arrest, but he denied ever having a handgun prior to or during the January 2023 incident.
