When the Indianapolis Bar Association created the first-of-its-kind Attorneys for an Independent Bench (“AIB”) PAC last year, it charted a new course to address public perception of lawyers and the legal system. In the area of judicial fund-raising, the IndyBar has taken an important first step toward dispelling the notion that justice can be bought. To avoid any appearance of impropriety associated with campaign contributions from lawyers, AIB severs the direct connection between attorneys and candidates for the Marion Circuit and Superior Court by accepting and then distributing those contributions amongst all certified judicial candidates.

Equally as important as this initiative are those that have been hand-picked to lead it. The Indianapolis Bar has announced that retired Indiana Supreme Court Justice Theodore Boehm will serve as the first Chair of AIB. Toby McClamroch, Managing Partner of Bingham McHale, will serve as its Treasurer and the remaining five-person Executive Committee includes the Honorable Sue Shields, James Voyles, and Greg Fehribach.

Voluntary contributions to the PAC will soon be accepted and will be distributed on an equal basis to certified judicial candidates thirty days prior to the general election. Additional information on AIB can be found at www.indybar.org.•
