On May 1, the Marion County Small Claims Court Task Force, an entity created by the Indiana Supreme Court, issued their findings in an effort to investigate whether litigants in those courts are denied access to justice. The Task Force was also tasked with determining whether the township trustees are controlling the staff and finances of those courts. The Indiana Supreme Court notes, “The documents outline the results of the Task Force’s investigation: findings of fact describing serious problems in the management and procedures of the Marion County Small Claims Courts and recommendations to remedy those problems.” Visit the Indiana Supreme Court website to view the report.
Nominating Commission to Select Indiana Chief Justice on May 15th
On Tuesday, May 15th, the Judicial Nominating Commission will vote to select Indiana’s next Chief Justice. The meeting is open to the public and press. It will be held in Room 319 of the State House from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Attorney Volunteers Needed for IndyBar Homeless Shelter Project
Want to make an impact? The IndyBar Homeless Shelter Project is looking for attorney volunteers. Through this project, IndyBar volunteers visit four local homeless shelters each month, giving legal advice and occasionally offering limited representation. Volunteers typically serve four, two-hour shifts per year, from 7 to 9 p.m., and visit the shelters in pairs.
