The Allen Superior Court is conducting a statewide search to replace retiring Magistrate Judge Jerry Ummel. The court hopes to have the new magistrate on the bench in late April.

Ummel is retiring in April, opening up a position on the Small Claims Court in the Civil Division of the Allen Superior Court. The court seeks a candidate with experience in all areas of legal practice, with an emphasis on civil cases. The magistrate’s responsibilities include solemnizing marriages, issuing warrants, setting bail, entering final orders or judgments in certain matters, and conducting evidentiary hearings and trials.

Applicants must be admitted to practice in Indiana, and be able to multi-task and handle a high-volume caseload involving both represented and unrepresented litigants.  The annual salary is $110,990.

Those interested in applying must request an application from John McGauley, court executive of Allen Superior Court, at [email protected]. The application and official transcripts of undergraduate and law school degrees must be submitted to the email address above by 12:30 p.m. March 13. Questions should be directed to McGauley by email or in writing at 715 S. Calhoun St., Room 208, Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

Interviews will be conducted after the date for submitting applications closes and a hiring decision is anticipated promptly thereafter, with the new magistrate starting in late April.
