A Jay County man has been formally charged with murder after allegedly slamming his girlfriend's infant child repeatedly against the ground.

The Commercial Review in Portland reports that a prosecutor filed the charge Thursday against 21-year-old Dalton R. Davis. He's being held without bond. His initial hearing is Friday.

Authorities were called Wednesday to the home Davis shared with his girlfriend and her daughter, 5-week-old Lillian Grace Lloyd. The child, who wasn't breathing, was pronounced dead later.

A Thursday affidavit says Davis was angry about an earlier argument with his girlfriend. It says he held the infant by her legs and "forcefully struck her body on the concrete two to three times."

It wasn't known if Davis yet had an attorney. If convicted, he faces a maximum 65-year prison term.
