Indiana’s longest-practicing attorney passed away recently.

Alexis “Alex” P. Cholis, of South Bend, died Nov. 8 at 99, according to his obituary. He formally retired in 2013, more than 71 years after he was admitted to the Indiana bar.

“The thing that meant most to me was what a great mentor he was,” said Paul Cholis, a nephew with whom Alex practiced from 1974 until his retirement. Paul Cholis continues the Cholis & Cholis South Bend trust and estate practice. Alex’s brother Nicholas founded the firm in 1936.

Alex Cholis was the subject of an Indiana Lawyer Legal Lions feature in 2013. A 1942 graduate of Notre Dame Law School, Cholis served as an officer in World War II before returning home to begin his legal career.
