King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, reiterated his support Wednesday for hearings after meeting in his Washington office with Garland, a judge on the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia.
The senator said in a statement he was impressed by Garland’s measured demeanor and his respect for the Constitution. King noted that Garland has been meeting privately with several senators. He said the meetings amount to a “slow-motion hearing without the public’s ability to participate and observe.”
King said it would be better if the senators’ questioning of Garland occurred in public. A majority of Republican senators say they will not support hearings or a vote on President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court.
