The judge, who decided not to run for re-election, has been selected to serve as a magistrate judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana.
The federal court announced Gotsch’s selection Tuesday. He succeeds Magistrate Judge Christopher A. Nuechterlein upon his retirement.
Chief Judge Philip P. Simon said Gotsch has “demonstrated the demeanor, intellect, and practical approach to problem solving that will make him an outstanding magistrate judge.”
Gotsch was among 29 people who applied for the judgeship in the South Bend Division. He has served as Circuit Court judge in St. Joseph County since 2004, when he was appointed to the bench by then-Gov. Joe Kernan to replace Judge Terry A. Crone, who was selected for the Indiana Court of Appeals.
He is a graduate of Notre Dame Law School.
Gotsch’s first day on the federal bench is Aug. 12, which means a replacement judge will need to be appointed to serve the remainder of his term.
