Vinovich won a three-way race to be elected as the northern Indiana attorney representative to the Judicial Nominating Commission and Judicial Qualifications Commission.
In a vote of eligible members of the bar certified Friday, Vinovich received 409 votes compared to 309 for Fort Wayne attorney Mark W. Baeverstad, and 304 votes for Debra Lynch Dubovich of Merrillville.
Vinovich will succeed John O. Feighner of Fort Wayne, whose term on the commission expires at the end of the year. Vinovich will serve a three-year term. A partner at Hilbrich Cunningham Dobosz Vinovich & Sandoval LLP, he served as ISBA president from 2012 to 2013.
Chaired by Chief Justice Loretta Rush, the Judicial Nominating Commission consists of three attorneys elected by the members of the bar in northern, central and southern Indiana, along with three lay members appointed from each district by the governor.
The JNC interviews and recommends for the governor’s selection potential judges on the Indiana Court of Appeals and justices of the Indiana Supreme Court. The Commission on Judicial Qualifications consists of the same members and investigates allegations of ethical misconduct by judicial officers. It also prosecutes alleged violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct and advises judges and judicial candidates of their ethical obligations.
