A Mishawaka woman has been charged in connection with the death of a 7-year-old boy who was run over by an SUV outside of a northern Indiana home.

Kayla Bennett, 22, was charged Thursday with causing a death while operating a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance. Authorities say she had marijuana in her system at the time of the June 1 crash in Mishawaka.

Court records don’t list a lawyer for Bennett.

Authorities say Briyson Councell had been playing with his 8-year-old sister outside a duplex when Bennett, who also lived there, was passing through an alley to park. His sister was not hurt.

Police say Bennett told them she smoked marijuana the night before the crash, but had not used drugs that day.
