Allen County Magistrate Jennifer DeGroote has been appointed by Gov. Eric Holcomb to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Allen Superior Court. DeGroote will succeed Judge Stanley A. Levine, who will retire Dec. 31.

“I have had the chance to learn from many great judges during my 19 years as a magistrate. Getting to join them on the Allen Superior Court bench is an opportunity I always hoped for,” DeGroote said in a Wednesday statement. “I will make the most of this rare opportunity by working hard every day to serve my community and deliver justice fairly and impartially.”

DeGroote was one of three finalists selected from a group of four applicants who were interviewed to succeed Levine. She has served as a magistrate judge for the Allen County Superior Courts since 1999, starting her legal career in private practice, and is a 1995 Valparaiso University School of Law graduate and a University of Michigan undergrad.

The magistrate currently serves on the Protective Order Committee of the Indiana Judges Association and was involved in judicial and court reform efforts at the local and state levels to improve the experience of litigants who appear in court.

DeGroote said she has been preparing for the opportunity to become a judge for her entire career.

“It will be the honor of my life to serve in this new role,” she said. “My sincerest thanks and gratitude go out to Governor Holcomb for this honor.”

DeGroote will be sworn in as judge of the Allen Superior Court on a date to be determined.
