Indiana Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray

After months of speculation and pressure from the Trump administration, Indiana Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray announced Friday that his chamber will not meet in December to consider redrawing the state’s Congressional maps.

“Over the last several months, Senate Republicans have given very serious and thoughtful consideration to the concept of redrawing our state’s congressional maps,” Bray said in a written statement. “Today, I’m announcing there are not enough votes to move that idea forward, and the Senate will not reconvene in December.”

In October, Gov. Mike Braun called for a special legislative session to discuss redrawing Indiana’s Congressional maps. Mid-decade redistricting was pushed by President Donald Trump’s administration, which hopes the effort would bolster Republicans’ chances of maintaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections.

Both the House and Senate were scheduled to convene Dec. 1 to take up the issue.

“I called for our legislators to convene to ensure Hoosiers’ voices in Washington, D.C., are not diluted by the Democrats’ gerrymandering. Our state senators need to do the right thing and show up to vote for fair maps,” Braun said in a written statement Friday afternoon. “Hoosiers deserve to know where their elected officials stand on important issues.”

Indiana’s Congressional delegation is currently a 7-2 Republican majority. Those who supported redrawing new maps had hoped to turn that into a 9-0 Republican advantage.

With Bray’s announcement that the Senate will not meet, the redistricting effort in Indiana appears to have stalled.
