Lawyer sentenced for theft from charity resigns from bar

An Indianapolis attorney has resigned from the bar rather than face a disciplinary proceeding a month after he was convicted of felony theft related to the misappropriation of funds from a charity that benefited Riley Children’s Hospital and a related business.

Juvenile termination. Affirms the termination of K.E.’s parental rights to her minor child, A.E. Finds the Department of Child Services made reasonable efforts to reunify mother and A.E. Therefore, mother has not established that her due process rights were violated. Also finds the Marion Superior Court order terminating mother’s parental rights is supported by clear and convincing evidence.

Holcomb officially orders wearing of masks effective Monday

Gov. Eric Holcomb on Friday issued an executive order requiring the wearing of face coverings in public as Indiana coronavirus cases continue at near-record levels. The order does not include potential criminal penalties, which Attorney General Curtis Hill had said Holcomb lacked the authority to enforce.

Derek Romano and Jeremiah Roberts had been drinking homemade wine on a Saturday night in their cell at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, Romano explained, as he told an investigator how he lost control and beat his cellmate to death. Romano, who is now charged in Roberts’ murder, shared not just a cell with Roberts, but also a criminal history.

Holcomb says he remains confident he can impose mask mandate, despite AG’s opinion otherwise

Eric Holcomb said Thursday he is confident he has the legal authority to impose a statewide mask mandate, telling reporters after an event in Lafayette that “we do our research before we speak.” His comments came after fellow Republican Attorney General Curtis Hill issued an opinion saying Holcomb lacked the authority to enforce a mask order.

Affirms Jessica Skeens’ 41-year sentence for conviction of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent resulting in death, three counts of Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent, and Class B misdemeanor marijuana possession. Finds, among other things, no abuse of discretion in the Delaware Superior Court’s instruction to the jury on causation. Finds Skeens’ sentence is not inappropriate in light of the nature of the offenses and her character.

Indiana bar applicants’ petition for open-book exam rejected

A late change in the way the Indiana bar exam will be administered has raised sufficient fears of some applicants about the potential for wide-spread cheating that they are asking the test to be open-book. But the Indiana Supreme Court rejected a petition from dozens of law school graduates who will take the bar exam remotely next week.
