Criminal. Reverses Jarvis Peele’s convictions of Level 6 felony possession of methamphetamine and two counts of Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement. Finds the Clark Circuit Court erred when it granted the state’s Criminal Rule 4(D) motion to continue Peele’s trial outside the timeframe required by his speedy-trial request. Finds Peele was entitled to discharge of the charges against him.

Federal death row inmate denied stay of execution

A man sentenced to die by lethal injection at the federal prison in Terre Haute was denied a stay of execution in federal court Wednesday, narrowing his remaining appeals and potentially setting the stage for his execution scheduled next month to proceed.

AMA calls for total ban on all e-cigarette, vaping products

The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for an immediate ban on all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The AMA cited a surge in underage teen use of e-cigarettes, which typically heat a solution that contains nicotine.

Elkhart drug offender granted Holcomb’s first sentence commutation

A convicted drug offender from northern Indiana will be released from prison about 1½ years early after Gov. Eric Holcomb commuted his sentence. The order issued Wednesday was the first sentence commutation during Holcomb’s term.

Reversal: Man’s drug convictions again tossed for speedy-trial violation

A Clark County man has again had his drug-related convictions vacated after the Indiana Court of Appeals concluded he was entitled to have them discharged when his request for a speedy trial was not met.

Denial of guardianship for undocumented immigrant’s niece reversed

An Indiana trial court judge who doubted whether he had the authority to grant a guardianship in a case before him involving two undocumented immigrants will get the case back from the Indiana Court of Appeals, which told him in a Wednesday opinion that his ruling was erroneous.

Faegre Baker Daniels discussing combination with Philly-based firm

Talks of a combination are underway between Minneapolis-based Faegre Baker Daniels and Philadelphia-based law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath, Indiana Lawyer confirmed Wednesday. A possible deal would mark the third since the beginning of the year among the top six law firms in the Indianapolis market.
