Among the members of the legal community she is known as Judge Barker, and within the Southern Indiana District Court family she is affectionately called SEB, but Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker will now become familiar to those outside the courtroom, as the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site has recognized her contributions to the state and the nation by naming its new citizenship plaza in her honor.

‘Global assault’ on Indiana abortion laws goes to skeptical 7th Circuit

The so-called “global assault” on Indiana’s abortion regulation scheme was back in court on Wednesday, with the state urging the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals to keep in place a stay of an injunction against several Indiana abortion provisions put in place over the summer. But at least one member of the appellate court seemed hesitant to render a decision given a high-profile abortion case pending at the U.S. Supreme Court.

7th Circuit orders stay of injunction on Indiana abortion laws

An injunction against several provisions of Indiana law that tighten access to abortions was stayed Wednesday by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. A dissenting judge, however, blasted the majority’s position and state laws that “piously purport to protect women’s health” while “chip(ping) away” at longstanding abortion precedent.

State, abortion providers take home wins, losses in wide-ranging abortion ruling

In an expansive decision detailing the “global assault” on numerous facets of Indiana’s abortion regulation scheme, a federal judge has struck down numerous Indiana abortion limits, such as those restricting telemedicine consultations between doctors and women seeking abortions. Other Hoosier abortion regulations, however, have been upheld, including those requiring an 18-hour delay between a patient’s receipt of required materials and her abortion procedure, as well as an ultrasound requirement.
