A longtime Lake County magistrate judge has been selected to become the next Lake Superior Court judge.

Natalie Bokota has been selected to fill a vacancy that will open this month on the Lake Superior Court, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Monday. Bokota will succeed Judge Clarence Murray on the Lake Superior Court, Criminal Division, when he retires Dec. 31.

Bokota has served as a Lake Superior Court magistrate judge for 20 years, hearing criminal matters and playing a role in the revision of the county’s pretrial release standards. She also assists with the oversight of the county’s mental health court.

Before becoming a magistrate judge in 2000, Bokota was a deputy prosecutor with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for nine years. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and a law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

Holcomb selected Bokota to succeed Murray after the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission interviewed 10 applicants to fill the vacancy.  Three magistrate judges – Bokota, Jeffrey Miller I and Timothy Ormes – were named as finalists for the position and were submitted to Holcomb’s office for final consideration.

Bokota will be sworn in as a Lake Superior Court judge on a date to be determined.
